Mike Manning, chairman of Transparency International’s Papua New Guinea chapter, has died of a heart attack.

Radio Australia:

One of Papua New Guinea’s leading anti-corruption campaigners has died suddenly.

Firmin Nanol reports the chairman of PNG’s anti-corruption group, Transparency International- has died of a heart attack. Mike Manning collapsed while walking in Rabaul in PNG’s East New Britain province.

He has been vocal about improper use of public funds and poor government decisions, which affect ordinary people.

Firmin says many believe Transparency International in PNG has an improved network of organisations against corruption because of Mr Manning’s strong leadership.

Originally from Australia he has been in PNG for sometime and became a naturalised citizen. Mr Manning was also a Director of PNG think tank-the Institute of National Affairs.

Raymond and I unfortunately never had a chance to meet Mike when we were in PNG for the Global Integrity Dialogues workshop earlier this year. However, the well informed and engaged participants that attended are very much part of his legacy.

Our condolences to his family and coworkers.
