The challenge

In the past 25 years, anti-corruption campaigners have taken a number of approaches to strengthen integrity, and tackle corruption. The majority of these efforts have focused on implementing so-called “best practice” solutions, such as establishing anti-corruption commissions and enacting zero tolerance policies. Despite these efforts, corruption persists. Traditional anti-corruption efforts tend to ignore people, their problems, and the political realities and patterns of incentives that cause governance challenges in particular places. To more effectively tackle corruption, reform advocates need to move beyond the normative, technocratic approaches that have prevailed across the field and instead support local stakeholders as they develop solutions tailored to the complex corruption challenges they face.

Our approach

We support the development and application of more effective approaches to tackling corruption, which account for the fact that corruption happens because it serves the interests and aligns with the incentives of powerful players. Our approach foregrounds the interests and perspectives of local change agents, and takes a systemic view of the factors that hinder progress towards reducing corruption and improving integrity. We work with our partners - citizen groups, CSOs, INGOs, and others - supporting their efforts to craft, implement and refine solutions to the specific corruption challenges they face. We use the evidence and insights generated through this work to inform and strengthen the effectiveness of global institutions working on corruption, in order to drive progress toward more integrity and accountability across the world.
